Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been long known to be used as a spice and popular when sprinkled on toast, lattes, and other foods/drinks.  But extracts from the bark of the cinnamon tree have also been used traditionally as medicine for some cultures throughout the world.  As a supplement,  cinnamon can be found in capsules, teas, and extracts.

Why do people take cinnamon?

Cinnamon Bark has been historically used as a digestive aid and to promote other health benefits. Recent studies indicate that Cinnamon may also help support healthy serum lipid levels. In addition, Cinnamon contains potent antioxidants that help to support cardiovascular function.  Lab studies have found that cinnamon can boost metabolism, reduces inflammation, lowers cholesterol, lowers blood sugar, has antioxidant effects, and can fight bacteria.

Boost Metabolism

Research suggests that cinnamon can be used to boost metabolism.  An essential oil in cinnamon called cinnamaldehyde can target your body’s metabolism and help burn more energy, thus causing a person to lose weight and reduce belly fat.

Reduces Inflammation

In a recent research study, it turns out that cinnamon is a top inflammation fighter.  Studies have shown that inflammation is the root cause of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis,  and many other health related diseases.  These research studies have shown that older adults should have a daily routine of taking cinnamon to help fight these diseases.

Fights Bacteria

Some research has found that by taking cinnamon daily, it will fight many types of bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli, and staph.

Lowers Cholesterol

Studies have shown that adults age 60 and above who takes or eats 1/4 teaspoon a day (or equivalent supplement) of cinnamon for 40 days, lowered their LDL (bad) cholesterol significantly.  Other studies showed that people who ate similar amounts of cinnamon for up to 18 days lowered their LDL and total cholesterol while it raised their HDL (good) cholesterol.

Lowers Blood Sugar

These studies have also indicated that taking these similar amounts whether in powder form or as a supplement will also reduce your blood sugar amount significantly.
